Alfa Laval PHE Gaskets: Types & Replacement Guide
Alfa Laval PHE Gaskets: Types, Clip Systems & Replacement Guide
Buyers searching for Alfa Laval plate heat exchanger gaskets usually face the same problem: the unit is weeping, the nameplate gives a model but no part number, and the attachment types all look alike. Fit the wrong one and it will not seat. So here is what actually differs between the gaskets Alfa Laval uses, the clip systems you will see, and how to order the right part for common models.
Clip-On or Glued: Two Attachment Styles
Alfa Laval gaskets sit in the plate groove in one of two ways. A clip-on gasket has small tabs that snap into holes punched in the plate, so no adhesive is needed and refitting is quick. A glued gasket is bonded into the groove and is common on older plate designs. Both seal the same way, and the difference only shows at service time.
The Alfa Laval Clip-On Gasket System
Inside the clip-on family, Alfa Laval uses different clip types depending on plate thickness and duty. Clip 3, Clip 8 and Clip 15 are the ones we see most often. The number describes the clip, not the gasket material or the plate model, so the same plate can take an EPDM, NBR or Viton gasket with the same clip style. If you are unsure which clip your plate uses, a photo of the plate corner settles it.
The Alfa Laval GC Gasket: Glued Types
Glued plates use a bonding step instead of clips, which Alfa Laval lists under its GC designation. Field service means scraping the old adhesive out of the groove before the new gasket goes in. That takes longer than a clip-on change, so some maintenance teams fit clip-on plates once the glued plate wears out.
Common Alfa Laval Models: M10B, M15 and M20
The M-series covers most of the units we quote. An Alfa Laval M15 gasket and an M20 gasket differ in profile and port size and are not interchangeable, even though the two units can look similar on the shop floor. The M10B sits in the same family at a smaller plate size. Match the gasket to the plate model every time, not to the frame.
