How Long Do Plate Heat Exchanger Gaskets Last?
In normal continuous service, plan on a gasket life of around 【4-6 years】 before a full re-gasket is due. That window shrinks with media above 80 °C, steam or hot-oil duties, aggressive chemicals, frequent start-stop cycles, and frames tightened beyond the correct A-measurement. Rubber that stays hot and compressed slowly loses its elasticity - and once lost, it cannot be restored.
5 Warning Signs That Your Gaskets Are Failing
Inspect gaskets at least once a year, and more often in hot or chemical duty. Replace them as soon as you see any of these signs of failing gaskets:
1. Weeping or dripping at the plate edges and portholes.
2. Hardening: the rubber feels stiff and no longer springs back when pressed.
3. Cracks along the gasket profile, especially at the plate corners.
4. Flattening: the gasket has lost its cross-section and sits lower in the groove.
5. Rising pressure drop or falling outlet temperatures - indirect signs that gaskets have relaxed and internal bypass is growing.
