Plate Heat Exchanger Gasket Replacement: When and How to Get It Right
If your plate heat exchanger is weeping at the joints, the rubber gasket is usually the culprit. Gaskets are the wearing part of every gasketed unit, and replacing them on time keeps your process running. The rubber gasket for a plate heat exchanger sits in the groove of every plate and separates the two fluid circuits. When it hardens, flattens or cracks, the result is external leaks or, worse, cross-contamination between the two media. That is why gasket care belongs in every maintenance schedule.
When to replace plate heat exchanger gaskets
Plan a full re-gasket every 4-6 years of continuous service, and inspect gaskets at least once a year. Replace individual gaskets sooner when you notice:
Cracks, hardening or flattening of the rubber profile
Leaks at the plate edges or around the portholes
Rising pressure drop or falling outlet temperatures
One gasket or the whole set?
A single leaking plate needs only one new gasket. But if several gaskets show cracks, or the unit is years past its last service, change the full set in one shutdown. A complete plate pack of replacement gaskets costs less than repeated stops.
Clip on vs glued gasket - which one is yours?
Look at the old gasket: clip-on types snap onto the plate edge with small tabs and need no adhesive, while glued gaskets are bonded into the groove. Alfa Laval and most modern units use clip-on gaskets. If you are unsure, compare the groove of your plate with the gasket cross-section, or simply send us a photo.

Yes. Clean the groove completely, never stretch a glued gasket while fitting it, and tighten the frame to the original A-measurement instead of tightening by feel.
