How to Replace Gaskets on a Plate Heat Exchanger: Step-by-Step

A weeping frame or a gasket gone hard is the most common plate heat exchanger repair. This is how to replace gaskets on a plate heat exchanger, from shutdown to the final tighten.

01 Before You Open the Unit

Record the A-measurement first, with the pack closed. If the gap is under the maker's figure, the plates are worn and new gaskets will not help. Order replacement gaskets for plate heat exchanger service in the right grade and attachment.

02 Mark and Open the Pack

Loosen the bolts diagonally, a little at a time, rather than one bolt fully out. Open the frame, lift the plates from the moving end, and number each one.

03 How to Remove the Old Gasket from a Heat Exchanger Plate

Clip-on gaskets peel from a corner along the groove; glued gaskets come off with a blunt plastic scraper. Keep metal tools off the plate; one scored groove will leak for good. Clear all old adhesive.

04 Clean the Grooves and Inspect the Plates

Wash with the approved cleaner and check the grooves are free of grit and glue. Hold each plate to the light; cracks or pitting mean the plate itself is the problem. Review your heat exchanger gasket replacement interval now.

05 Fit the New Gaskets

Clip gaskets seat dry, pressed home until the tabs catch. Glued gaskets need a dry, clean surface, a thin even layer of adhesive, and no stretch. Let the glue cure before closing.

06 Close the Pack and Tighten to A

Stack the plates in order, fit the end plates and bolts, then close to the A-measurement from the start. Tighten diagonally in small stages. Too tight crushes the gasket and too loose lets it weep.

Step | Watch for | Quick check

Record A | Pack pre-set | Vs spec

Mark plates | Mixed order | Numbers visible

Remove gasket | Gouged groove | Groove clean

Fit new gasket | Stretched, shifted | Flat in groove

Close pack | One-pass bolting | Cross-tighten

FAQ

Q: How often should plate heat exchanger gaskets be replaced?

A: Replace at hardening, cracking or weeping rather than by the calendar. Hot duties age gaskets faster.

Q: Do I have to glue the new gasket?

A: Not always. Many units use clip-on gaskets with no adhesive. Match what the maker supplied, or ask us.

Q: Can I reuse the gasket I just removed?

A: No. Once compressed and released, it will not seal again.
