What Does a Plate Heat Exchanger Gasket Do?


Every plate carries a rubber gasket around its edge and around the portholes. When the plate pack is clamped together, the gaskets press against the neighbouring plates and seal the channels between them. Because the gasket pattern alternates the flow, it also channels each fluid into the correct path, hot on one side and cold on the other. A gasket is therefore both the seal and the flow guide of the unit.


Types of Plate Heat Exchanger Gaskets: Clip-On vs Glued


Plate heat exchanger gaskets come in two fitting styles. Clip-on gaskets snap into the groove with small tabs and need no adhesive, and most modern units use this type. Glued gaskets are bonded into the groove and are common on older or simpler plates. They seal the same way. The difference shows at service time, when clip-on types are far quicker to strip and refit.


Plate Heat Exchanger Gasket Material: Your Options


The rubber compound sets the limits of heat and chemical resistance:

- EPDM: the general-purpose choice for water and steam at moderate temperatures.

- NBR: the workhorse for oily and hydrocarbon duties.

- Viton (FKM): for aggressive chemicals and higher-temperature service.
