Why Is My Plate Heat Exchanger Leaking? 7 Common Causes & Fixes
A plate heat exchanger leaking at the frame is rarely bad luck. Usually it is an aged seal, plates closed to the wrong dimension, or a changed duty. First decide which leak you have. An external leak drips at the frame or ports; an internal leak hides inside the pack, letting pressures drift and the product come out wrong with nothing dripping.
01 Aged or Hardened Gasket
The most common cause. Rubber loses elasticity with heat and time, then cracks or takes a set. Replace a gasket that is hard, glossy or split.
02 Wrong Gasket Material
A gasket that swells, blisters or turns soft is showing the elastomer is wrong for the fluid. Match the fluid and temperature to the grade before reordering.
03 Over- or Under-Tightening
Close to the wrong A-measurement and you either crush the gasket or leave it too slack to seal. Tighten to the maker's dimension, diagonally, in stages.
04 Gasket Shifted or a Dirty Seat
A gasket that rolled during assembly, or a groove with grit in it, leaks from day one. Clean the groove and reseat it flat.
05 Damaged Plates
Plates crack, pit or bend, and a heat exchanger leaking between plates almost always starts here. Hold each to a light and replace any damaged ones.
06 Loose Ports and Flanges
A plate heat exchanger leaking at ports is often a loose connection or a spent flange gasket, not a core problem. Re-torque to spec first.
07 Thermal or Pressure Cycling
Water hammer and fast temperature swings fatigue gasket and plate. If leaks keep returning, check how the unit is started and stopped.
